Stefani wine

Term used in Austria for a wine whose grapes were harvested on 26 December (St. Stephen's Day). This day is named after St. Stephen (1-36), who was the first of seven deacons of the early Christian community in Jerusalem and died as a martyr. Due to this very late vintage, it is mostly an ice wine or a Trockenbeerenauslese. In Austria, Stefaniwein or Stefanilese is an official designation under wine law. It may be used here if the harvest date is noted on the label. Similar wines are Christwein, Dreikönigswein, Leopoldiwein, Martiniwein, Nikolowein and Weihnachtswein. See also under special wines.
