New Latitude Wines

This term was coined by Thai-based wine writer Frank Norel at a conference in Bangkok in 2003. It means "wines of new latitudes" and refers to the fact that vines are increasingly being cultivated outside the two vine belts (40th to 50th north and 30th to 40th south latitudes). This is due on the one hand to climate change and on the other hand to new cultivation techniques such as artificial irrigation. This has made viticulture possible in tropical as well as northern areas. In the future, this will probably affect countries such as Denmark, England and Poland in the northern hemisphere, and Brazil, China and India in the southern hemisphere. Large wine companies are already investing in three of the latter. See also under climate.
