The red grape variety (breeding no. Kuhlmann 296-1) is an interspecific new variety between Millardet et Grasset 101 O.P. x Knipperlé. It contains genes from Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed at the beginning of the 20th century at the Oberlin Institute in Colmar/Alsace by grower Eugène Kuhlmann (1858-1932). The new variety Triomphe d'Alsace was also created with the same parents.

The early-maturing vine is resistant to both mildew and botrytis (grey rot) as well as frost, but is susceptible to stem rot. It produces red wines similar to Pinot Noir, but with a slight foxy flavour.
