Krankl Manfred

The winery "Sine qua non" is located in Oak View (Ventura County, Central Coast) south of Santa Barbara in California. The name means "absolutely indispensable". It was founded in 1994 by Austrian Manfred Krankl, who emigrated to the USA in 1980, and his wife Elaine. Until 2001, Krankl ran the bakery "La Brea Bakery" in Los Angeles and was a partner in the gourmet temple "Campanile". The first wine was the 1994 Syrah "Pique Dame" from the Bien Nacido vineyard made from grapes bought in at the time. In a perfectionist manner, so-called garage wines are produced, which are only released in limited quantities.

The vineyards today cover around 25 hectares of vineyards in the AVA areas of Santa Barbara County, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley. They are distributed among the four Estate Vineyards (sites) Eleven Confessions with the oldest vineyards (22 ha), The Third Twin, Molly Aïda (2 ha) and with partly ungrafted vines Cumulus. The red wine varieties Syrah, Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Pinot Noir( until 2005), Mourvèdre (Monastrell), Graciano, Petite Sirah (Durif) and Touriga Nacional are cultivated, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Marsanne, Petit Manseng, Roussanne and Viognier. A large proportion are Rhône varieties (see also under Rhône Rangers).
