The red grape variety comes from Italy. Synonyms are Balsamina Galloppa, Balsamina Grossa, Gaglioppa, Galloppa, Lancianese Nero and Moretta. It must not be confused with the Gaglioppo variety because of apparent synonyms or morphological similarities. According to DNA analyses, there is a parent-offspring relationship with the Sangiovese variety. The medium-ripening vine has thin-skinned berries. It was once widespread in the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Macerata in the Marche region. It was already threatened with extinction in the 1990s, but has been revived by new plantings. In 2016, however, no stocks were identified (Kym Anderson).
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
