Designation (also Alter Fränkischer Satz, Altfränkischer Satz, Altfränkisch Gemischter Satz) for grape varieties typical of the German wine-growing region of Franconia, which are cultivated in the form Gemischter Satz. However, the term has no legal meaning in wine law. These are mainly the varieties Silvaner (mostly dominant), Traminer and Riesling. One such wine is produced by Weingut Rainer Sauer, for example.

Other varieties such as Roter Elbling, as well as red wine varieties such as Blauer Silvaner, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Blauer Portugieser are also used. Unfortunately, the exact acreage of Gemischter Sätze in Germany has not yet been recorded. According to estimates by Thomas Riedl, a specialist in old grape varieties, there are only around four hectares of ungrafted mixed sets left in Germany. These are located in the Baden, Franconia, Nahe and Saale-Unstrut growing regions. The German graduate biologist Andreas Jung identified a total of 25 grape varieties in 2007 and 2009 at ungrafted Kathert'schen Weinberg in Karsdorf, Saale-Unstrut. See also under Franconian.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
