Drainage

Term (drain = to drain, dry out, drainage) for drainage and drainage, but also drainage system. In general, it refers to the natural properties of a soil that prevent water from accumulating in the soil under plants. However, it also includes measures using technical systems to counteract waterlogging on agricultural land.

Causes & effects

Waterlogging can have different causes. Above all, the Bodentypsoil type plays a decisive role. Dense, heavy soils consisting of loam, clay and sand tend to become waterlogged or have poor drainage. Further and reinforcing influences are a high groundwater table and external water inflow.
