Term (also berry breakage) for a phenomenon during the maturation (ripening phase) of grapes in which the berries break open. The causes are not yet exactly clear, but are related to the water supply. This is favoured by water stress during the vegetation cycle between flowering and the softening of the berries. Especially the alternation of dryness or drought (deficiency) in the early ripening phase and later irrigation (overabundance) during the véraison (colour change) seems to lead to an increased risk of splitting. Other causes are diseases such as powdery mildew and pests such as grape berry moth. The damaged berries also attract insects and pest birds. See a list of all diseases and pests under Vine Enemies.
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
