Municipal appellation 16 kilometres south of Dijon in the Côte d'Or area. It has just under 200 inhabitants, but is one of the most famous wine-growing communities in Burgundy. The name is derived from the Vouge stream that flows through the village. Cistercian monks planted the famous Clos de Vougeot vineyard here in the 14th century and enclosed it in 1330 with a kilometre-long high wall (Clos = closed, clôture = enclosure) that still stands today. It is the only Grand Cru vineyard and covers 50 hectares of vines.
The four Premiers Crus cover 14 hectares of vineyards. These are Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot for white wines ( monopolised by the Domaine de la Vougeraie, part of the Boisset family business), Clos de la Perrière, Les Crâs andLes Petits de Vougeots. Wines from just under five hectares are marketed under the Vougeot village appellation.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
