The French institution was founded in 1998 for grape growers and winegrowers. It is the only national certification specifically for the viticulture sector, based on the pillars of environmental protection and sustainability. The mission of Terra Vitis is: to seek the best possible balance between respect for the environment, human well-being and the sustainability of French businesses, guided by common sense and shared values . Terra Vitis is recognised by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
Terra Vitis' approximately 1,800 members are organised in seven regional associations. These are Terra Vitis Alsace, Terra Vitis Beaujolais - Rhône-Alpes, Terra Vitis Bordeaux, Terra Vitis Bourgogne - Franche-Comté, Terra Vitis Champagne, Terra Vitis Loire and Terra Vitis Rhône-Méditerranée.
