Stickle

A term commonly used in viticulture, especially in Germany (also Sticher or Stiggel, in Austria Steher, Säulen or Bagstall) for a pole, usually made of wood, on which the vines were trained single-pole training. The Romans already used stakes in chamber construction. Stickel training was the predominantly practised form of vine training until the end of the 1950s. From then onwards, high training with wire frames became increasingly popular. See a list of all systems at vine training.
