Springworm winder

The insect (Sparganothis pilleriana), which belongs to the moth family of butterflies, is widespread throughout Europe and became increasingly common again in Germany towards the end of the 1990s. The pest occurs on more than 100 plants and favours vines in wine-growing areas. The jumping worm overwinters as an approximately 1.5 millimetre long, greenish caterpillar with a black head in a web, preferably in cracks in the bark of the stem.

Damage caused by caterpillars

In spring, the caterpillars migrate to the shoots, bore into the swelling buds and hollow them out. Dark droppings can be found in the vicinity of the small boring site as a characteristic feature. After budding, the now grey to dirty green caterpillars attack and eat the leaves, which is why they are also known as leafworms. Leaf stalks, shoots and young shoots are also infested.
