In a new variety of grape variety, the parentage (parentage) is indicated in the form of "New variety = mother variety x Father variety". Father variety is the second mentioned grape variety, for example, "Müller-Thurgau = Riesling (mother) x Madeleine Royale (father)". See also under crossing direction and crossing.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
