Name for white and red grape varieties in Italy whose origins are unknown. As early as the 15th century, excellent wines were produced from a Rossese Bianco or Roxeise variety, as reported in 1596 by the naturalist Andrea Bacci (1524-1600). He even attributed "magical powers" to Ligurian wines. The name is probably derived from the intense berry colours. The following varieties exist in Liguria, Piedmont and France:
There is also a Rossese di Dolceacqua DOC area for red wine in the west of the Italian region of Liguria. There, the Tibouren variety is probably referred to as Rossese di Dolceacqua or Rossese.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
