The white grape variety with reddish berry colour originates from the USA. Synonyms are Bland, Bland's Madeira, Bland's Pale Red, Blands Virginia, Carolina Powel, Pale Red, Powell, Red Fox, Red Scuppernong, Rose Grape, Red Fox Grape and Virginia Muscadell. According to analyses by the South African biochemist Dr. Jeronimo (Jerry) Rodrigues, it is probably a natural cross between Vitis aestivalis x Vitis vinifera. It may also have a small amount of Vitis labrusca genes (ex the mother or father variety). From a self-pollination of Red Bland the variety Cunningham has been developed. According to Dr. Erika Maul (Julius Kühn-Institut), the Vitis vinifera father variety is identical to Petit Meslier.
