The red grape variety (also known as Négret de Banhos) originates from France. The name means "black from Banhars".

According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it originates from a presumably natural cross between Fer x Manseng Noir. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics).
The medium-ripening vine is susceptible to botrytis (grey rot) and black spot disease (Phomopsis) due to its compact bunch shape. It produces deep, dark, low-acid and low-alcohol red wines with soft tannins.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
