The red grape variety originates from the border region France-Spain. There are around 60 synonyms; the main ones grouped alphabetically by country are Arech, Arrouya, Bequignaou, Béquignol, Bois Droit, Braucol, Brocol, Caillaba, Camaralet Noir, Camerouge, Camirouch, Chalamoncet, Chalosse Noire, Chausset, Couahort, Cruchinet, Ere, Estronc, Fer Bequignaou, Fer Noir, Ferre, Fer Servadou, Folle Rouge, Hèr, Hère, Herrant, Herre, Mances, Mansin, Mansois, Mauron, Moura, Mourac, Mourach, Noir Brun, Petit Bordelais, Petit Fer, Petit Mourastel, Piec, Piek, Pinenc, Plant de Fer, Queufort, Samençois, Saoubade, Saumances, Saumansois, Saumences, Servadou, Veron, Verron (France); Gragnelut (Italy); Caillaba (Spain).
