Molar

The red grape variety originates from Portugal. Synonyms are Baboso Negro, Boto de Gal, Boton de Gallo Negro, Folha de Figueira Preta, Molar Preto, Mollar, Moyar, Negra Mole, Negra Mollar, Preto Salmura, Puesto Mayor, Rabo de Ovelha Tinto, Rabo de Ovelha Tinto Pinhel, Ramisco Tinto, Saborinho, Tinta, Tinta de Porto Santo, Tinta Madeira, Tinta Mole, Tinta Negra, Tinta Negra Mole, Tinta Porto Santo, Tinta Sabreirinha, Verdejo Negro and Verdejo Tinto. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Prieto Picudo x Savagnin (Traminer). However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). It should not be confused with the varieties Mollard or Negramoll (both with synonym Molar) due to seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities. In 2016, no stocks were reported under the name Molar. However, 1.7 hectares of vineyards were recorded under the name Tinta de Porto Santo; it is possibly the same grape variety (Kym Anderson statistics).
