Maturana Blanca

The white grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Maturano and Ribadavia. It is not a colour mutation of the red variety Maturana Tinta (synonym for the Trousseau Noir variety). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2021, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Savagnin (Traminer) x Castellana Blanca. It was already mentioned in the Rioja region in 1622 under the name Ribadavia. The variety, which was already threatened with extinction, was successfully reactivated. The early-ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to botrytis. It produces high-alcohol, acidic white wines with flavours of citrus, tropical fruit and herbs. In Spain, it has been authorised in the Rioja DOCa wine since 2007 and occupies 11 hectares there. In Italy, it is cultivated on a total of 2.5 hectares in the regions of Apulia , Emilia-Romagna , Lazio and Marche. In 2016, a total of 13 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym AndersonAnderson Kym).
