Famous ancient white wine (Massico) of the Roman Empire from unknown grape variety described by Pliny the Elder (23-79). It grew in vineyards on the Monte Massico hill range on the west coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea near Naples in what is now the Campania region. The wine was highly praised by the poets of its time. It was transported to the ancient port city of Sinuessa (today the municipality of Mondragone is located there) on the Via Appia, where the amphorae used for transporting wine were made in many potteries at that time. The famous Falernian wine was produced in the immediate vicinity. Some ancient authors claim that the Massicum was the reason for the Falernian's demise.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
