The appellation is located around the eponymous municipality of Montpellier in the northeast of the French wine region Languedoc. To the north is the AOC Pic Saint-Loup. It was classified as AOC in 2003 and belongs to the second quality category "Grands Vins du Languedoc". The vineyards cover 1,000 hectares of vines on varied soils of sandstone, limestone, pebble and marl. They are spread over 46 communes in the Département of Hérault. The red wine is blended from at least 2 of the 3 main varieties Grenache Noir(Garnacha Tinta), Mourvèdre(Monastrell) and Syrah, as well as Carignan Noir(Mazuelo).
