The white grape variety comes from Portugal. Synonyms are Alfrecheiro, Alfrocheiro, Alfrocheiro Branco, Branquinha, Engana Rapazes, Esgana Rapazes, Espadeiro Branco, Fernão Pires de Beco, Malvasia Fina, Padeiro Branco, Talia, Trebiano and Ugni Blanc. It must not be confused with Fernão Pires or Trebbiano Toscano (Douradinha) (previously considered identical), despite the fact that synonyms or morphological similarities may appear to indicate this. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2015, this is a presumably natural cross between Amaral x Alfrocheiro (two 'red' varieties). However, this is based on only 21 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). In 2010, no stocks have been reported yet (Kym Anderson); probably due to the fact that they were identified only later.
