The appellation for sparkling wines is located in the Département Aude in the west of the French wine region Languedoc and is identical to the Limoux area. It was classified as AOC in 1990 and belongs to the second quality category "Grands Vins du Languedoc". The main varieties for the sparkling wine produced according to the Champagne method are Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc (add. max. 90%), others are Mauzac Blanc and Pinot Noir (add. max. 20%). Well known producers are Domaine de l'Aigle, Robert and Château de Villelongue. A second AOC for sparkling wine is Blanquette de Limoux, an AOC for white and red still wines is Limoux.
