The red grape variety comes from Portugal. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2015, it is probably a natural cross between Alfrocheiro x Ramisco. However, this is based on only 21 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The variety is cultivated in the areas Beira Interior (3 ha), Trás-os-Montes (40 ha) and Douro (9 ha). In 2010, a total of 52 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
