The winery is located in the commune of Maumusson in the Madiran area of south-west France. The owner Alain Brumont (born 1946) is largely responsible for the leap in quality in this area. In 1979, he took over the Château Bouscassé estate from his father and acquired Château Montus two years later. When the INAO limited the proportion of Tannat in favour of other varieties, the winegrowers under Brumont's leadership fought against it. Brumont planted four fifths of his vineyards with Tannat. He made numerous trips for inspiration and experimented with the lowest yields, long maceration, frequent racking and long barrel ageing. Vine rows are oriented to grow "towards 15:00" for optimal exposure with up to 15 hours of sunlight daily. Many vines are pruned five to seven times a year to maintain a regular cluster of grapes.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
