French winemaking pioneer Alain Brumont (b. 1946) inherited the Château Bouscassé estate in the Madiran area of southwest France from his father in 1979. In 1981, he acquired Château Montus. He decided on the autochthonous grape variety Tannat and experimented with different methods in the vineyard and cellar to increase the quality. The first vintage of "Montus Prestige" in 1985 was the first Madiran wine made from 100% Tannat and was called " Pétrus des Madiran" at international tastings, referring to the famous Château Pétrus. This also raised the profile of Madiran. In 1991, he was voted winemaker of the decade by Gault Millau magazine.
