The winery is located in the municipality of Saint-Laurent in the Médoc (Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux). Its origins date back to the 13th century, when it was originally called Château de Saint-Laurent. In 1427, Jean de Foix gave the property to his equerry Carnet, who gave it its current name. In the Bordeaux classification in 1855, it was awarded fourth place (Quatrième Grand Cru Classé). After a chequered history with many owners, the totally run-down estate came into the possession of Louis Lipschitz in 1962. The buildings were subsequently renovated and the vineyards replanted. Finally, in 1999, the estate became the property of Bernard Magrez, who also owns Château Pape-Clément. He engaged the well-known oenologist Michel Rolland (*1947) as a consultant. The vineyards cover 48 hectares of vines with the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (39%) and Cabernet Franc (11%). The long-lasting red wine is matured for 18 months in 50% new barriques. The second wine is called "Les Douves de Carnet".

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
