Cellar pipe

A term commonly used in German-speaking countries for the tubular wine cellar, which was dug from the press house into the slope, usually consisting of loess or clay. Side passages were often also dug. Due to the even temperatures, the storage conditions here are ideal. The picture on the left shows a cellar tube, the picture on the right a press house in the Kellergasse in Prellenkirchen(Lower Austria). See also under winegrowing customs.
