BÖLW

The "Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft" is an umbrella organisation of producers, processors and traders of organic food in Germany. It was founded in 2002 with its headquarters in Berlin as the successor organisation of AGÖL (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Ökologischer Landbau). Its members are growers' associations and associations of traders and processors:

  • AÖL (Association of Ecologically Committed Food Traders and Druggists)
  • Association of organic food producers
  • Biokreis (organic food growers' association)
  • Bioland (organic farming)
  • Biopark (harmony for agriculture and nature conservation)
  • BNN (Federal Association of Natural Foods and Natural Products)
  • DEMETER (biodynamic farming and quality)
  • ECOLAND (organic farming association)
  • ECOVIN (Germany's and also the world's largest organic winegrowing association)
  • Fair'n Green (seal for sustainable viticulture)
  • Gäa derived from Gaia = Greek goddess (organic agriculture)
  • Naturland (international association for organic agriculture)
  • Reformhaus (retail trade for food, over-the-counter natural medicines, body care)
  • Verbund Ökohöfe (organic farms association)

Its main task is public relations work on the topic of organic food production and the promotion of the image of organic food in society. BÖLW is also active in the monitoring committee of the Federal Organic Farming Programme and is a shareholder in ÖPZ GmbH, which administers the German organic label. Membership exists in IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements), where the group of German-speaking IFOAM members is coordinated. The Austrian counterpart of BÖLW is Bio Austria. See also under Organic Viticulture.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
