The vine disease belongs to the group of yellowing diseases. It was already known to the Romans in ancient times. Esca (Latin for tinder) refers to the tinder-like consistency of the wood in the late stages of the disease. According to another version, the name is derived from the Greek "yska", which means "rotten wood". It is mainly found in warmer regions with a Mediterranean climate such as France, Italy, Portugal and California.
Mixed infections of the fungus species Phaeomoniella chlamydospora, Phaeoacremonium minimum and Fomitiporia mediterranea, but also others such as Phaeomoniella chlamydospora and Stereum hirsutum are named as causes. The infection leads to congestion of the vascular tissue, resulting in gradual degeneration of the wood.
