This red grape variety (also known as Spiegel-Roy 401) is a new cross between Sousão (Vinhão) x Carignan Noir (Mazuelo). The crossing took place in 1972, the selection in 1984 by Roy Spiegel in Israel. Variety protection was granted in 1988. The early to medium ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis, and sensitive to frost, but resistant to heat and drought. It yields deep purple (argaman in Hebrew) red wines with rather moderate acidity and tannins, which are mainly used as blends. In Israel, the variety is mainly cultivated in the Shomron region (Samaria) on the Mediterranean coast. The area under cultivation in 2016 was 275 hectares (Kym Anderson).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
