This seven-volume work was compiled by the French viticultural expert Victor Vermorel (1848-1927) in collaboration with the scientist Pierre Viala (1859-1936) after ten years of study and meticulous research with a team of seventy and published in 1910. It was the standard ampelographic work at the time and contained 24,000 grape varieties with their synonyms, 570 mostly coloured lithographic plates and numerous illustrations (four of which are shown below). As we know today, there were many identical ones among them. Incidentally, many reproductions of the grape variety images were used in the grape variety bible "Wine Gra pes" (Jancis Robinson, José Vouillamoz, Julia Harding) published in 2012.
Using the encyclopaedia is not only time-saving, but also extremely convenient. What's more, the information is always up to date.
