Virucidal

Virucides or virocides (virus = poison, slime, mucilage, sap and caedere = to kill) are chemical or biological agents that inactivate viruses. They belong to the group of pesticides. The term virucidal is misleading because viruses do not have all the characteristics of a living organism and are therefore not killed but inactivated. Some of the substances are not only virucidal, but also bactericidal and/or fungicidal.

Types of virucides

These frequently used virucides are chemically synthesised and are classified as organic virucides:

  • Ethanol and isopropanol - alcohol-based disinfectants that inactivate viruses
  • Sodium hypochlorite - chlorine compound that destroys viral structures through oxidation
  • Hydrogen peroxide - strong oxidising agent that denatures viral proteins and nucleic acids
