The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Anacelatto, Ancellotta di Massenzatico (the name refers to the municipality of Massenzatico, where it is widespread), Ancelota, Ancellotti, Lancellotta, Lancelotta, Uino and Uvino.

The parentage is unknown. Direct descendants are the two varieties Cornacchia (presumably through natural crossing) and Galotta (a new variety).
