The grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Cabernet Sauvignon x Berlandieri. Synonyms are 333 EM, 333 E.M. Foex, École Montpellier 333 and Fox 333 EM. Genes of Vitis berlandieri and Vitis vinifera are present. The hybrid was crossed in France in 1883 by the breeder Gustave Foëx (1844-1906). It was one of the first successful rootstocks in the fight against phylloxera.
