The German viticulture expert and Protestant pastor Balthasar Sprenger (1724-1791) studied religion and philosophy in Tübingen (Baden-Württemberg) and graduated with a Master's degree in 1744. After travelling through Germany, Holland, England and France on scientific study trips, he was a deacon in Göppingen from 1753 to 1756 and subsequently held numerous ecclesiastical and political positions. Sprenger was a member of the academies in Bern, Göttingen, Jena and Zurich, as well as the Imperial Academy of Natural Scientists. Through numerous experiments and publications, he strongly influenced the positive development of agriculture and viticulture in Württemberg and throughout Germany. He bred vines in Stuttgart and Eilfingerbronn and experimented with sparkling wine on German soil from 1764.
