Common name in South Tyrol for a special form of stalk paralysis occurring on the grape tip of the Vernatsch (Schiava Grossa) variety; see there.

This vine disease (also known as lame stalk disease, in France Desséchement de la rafle, in California Water Berry) is a physiological disorder and belongs to the group of wilt diseases. However, stem rot should not be confused with grape wilt or stem rot (in Botrytis), which have similar symptoms but different causes.

Symptoms

The disease manifests itself as small, sharply demarcated, dark necroses (withering) on the grape cluster, no larger than the size of a pin, which rapidly increase in size. Ultimately, this causes extensive drying of the grape cluster, which leads to total shrivelling and wilting of the berries below the affected area.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
