An annual wine competition organised by ÖWM (Österreich Wein Marketing GmbH) since 1998 with the official title "Selektion Spargelwein". Wines that go particularly well with asparagus dishes are awarded prizes. Classically vinified, dry white wines with a maximum alcohol content of 13.5% by volume are eligible to participate. There are three grape variety categories Grüner Veltliner, Burgundy family (Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay) as well as the variety of all other white grape varieties. In order to promote sales, a directory of producers or sources of supply is compiled by the ÖWM for catering and trade businesses. Various advertising materials (stickers "Selektion Spargelwein"), table displays, offer cards and posters support the sale of asparagus wines. In Germany, asparagus wine is a designation (without wine-legal meaning) for a wine that goes particularly well with asparagus and is also called spring or summer wine. In the 2010s, however, this wine competition was abandoned. See also under special wines.
