Area named after the commune of the same name in the southern part of the Rhône wine region. The vineyards cover some 900 hectares of vines, mainly in the commune of Rasteau, but also to some extent in the communes of Cairanne and Sablet in the Département of Vaucluse. In terms of classification, a distinction must be made between red wines (AOC and Cru only since the 2009 vintage), white wines and rosé wines (both are marketed as Côtes du Rhône-Villages) and Vin doux naturel (AOC since 1944). The climate is Mediterranean, the often occurring mistral leads to a sensitive cooling. The areas of the high class wines are oriented to the south and shielded from the mistral. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Montagne de Ventabren on soils of siliceous and greyish limestone with a ground mass of reddish clay.
