Département in south-east France with the capital Avignon in the political region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, named after the town of Vaucluse (now Fontaine-de-Vaucluse). It borders the départements of Gard (west), Ardèche (north-west), Drôme (north-east), Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (east), Var (south-east) and Bouches-du-Rhône (south). The western border is formed by the Rhône. At the beginning of the 14th century, Avignon became the seat of the popes and capital of Christianity for 70 years due to power struggles in Rome. Vaucluse is divided between the Provence and Rhône regions in terms of wine law. The vineyards cover around 50,000 hectares.
