The white grape variety originates from Switzerland or Hungary. Synonyms are Blancher, Blanchiare, Blanschier, Bordeaux Blanc, Borgogne Blanc, Bourgogne Blanc, Bourguignon, Bourgogne Gros (2nd main name), Burginon, Gamai Blanc, Gamay Blanc, Gros Bordeaux, Gros Bourgignon, Gros Bourgogne, Gros Rhin, Planscher, Planschier, Plantscher Gros Bourgogne and Schaffhausen. The Schwyz German name is derived from "Blanchier" (white). According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it is a direct descendant of the Hungarian variety Furmint; the second parent is unknown. In Switzerland, the variety is counted in the grape variety group Alte Gewächse. The medium-ripening vine is susceptible to botrytis. It produces white wines with moderate acidity and a light Kamilleton. The variety is cultivated in small quantities in the municipality of Visperterminen in Valais and Vaud. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
