North Canterbury

The wine-growing region in New Zealand, named after the administrative region, is located on the east coast of South Island. Viticulture has only been practised here since 1978. The winegrowing area is divided into two sub-regions: the Waipara Valley north of Christchurch and the plain around Christchurch. The vineyards cover 1,497 hectares of vines, stretching for almost 200 km along the east coast. Many of them are protected with nets against starlings, which can cause great damage. The Pacific-influenced climate with arctic winds is characterised by long, hot summers with 2,100 hours of sunshine annually and cool winters. It is one of the so-called cool-climate areas. The soils consist of gravel deposits from the rivers and calcareous clay on their slopes. The most important grape varieties are Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, as well as Pinot Noir. Well-known wineries are Georges Road Wines, Greystone Wines, Muddy Water, Pegasus Bay and Waipara Hills.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
