Monks

Many Roman Catholic religious communities owned extensive vineyards. Monastery operations were often based on professional viticulture. The five most important orders in terms of viticulture include the Benedictines, Franciscans, Jesuits, Carthusians and Cistercians. These orders contributed significantly to the development of viticulture in many European countries and also in the New World.
