The red grape variety is a new cross between Merlot x (Băbească Neagră x Muskat-Ottonel). The cross was made in Romania by the breeders A. Ionescu and M. Oslobeanu. The name was given after the Romanian seaside resort on the Black Sea. In 2016, 0.4 hectares of vineyards were designated in Romania (Kym Anderson).
