liqueur

Designation for a characteristic taste in the context of a wine appeal. It is characterized by a thickened and partly dried fruit, a lot of alcohol and a certain sweetness. The latter is not necessarily due to residual sugar, but more to the high grape ripeness and alcohol. Chocolaty and candied nutty aromas are also often present, but are usually a result of ageing in new barriques. Especially red wines from very warm to hot vintages or regions of origin, but also from grapes that have been deliberately harvested overripe, often show liqueur-like aromas. With some wine styles this is quite intentional, for example with Amarone and similar wines. More often, however, this is unintentional, is at the expense of fineness and leads to a negative evaluation or wine rating. Liqueur notes, however, are by no means a typical (as one might perhaps mistakenly assume), but rather a rare characteristic of sweet wines. There are, however, liqueur wines produced according to special wine law regulations.
