Kanu

The winery "Kanu Wines" is located on the Polkedraai hills in the South African wine district of Stellenbosch. Its origins date back to 1692, when the German mercenary Arnout Jansz received land from the then Governor Simon van der Stel (1639-1712) and founded the "Spier Wine Estate". After several changes of ownership it was bought by Hydro Holdings in 1997 and renamed to its present name. The responsible winemaker is Teddy Hall, who is supported by the famous winemaker "Mr. Sauvignon Blanc" Mike Dobrovic and by the University of Stellenbosch. The vineyards cover 150 hectares, but not all of them are yet in production. They are planted with the white wine varieties Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc and the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz. The wines are marketed under the "Kanu Range" and "Spier Wine Estate" lines. Well-known wines are the varietal wines Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc as well as the Cabernet-Merlot blend "Keystone". Almost half a million bottles of wine are produced annually.
