Kalbenstein

single vineyard in the municipality of Gambach ( Maindreieck area) in the German wine-growing region of Franconia). The first documentary evidence of viticulture dates back to 1306. In 1784, a millennium flood on the Main caused a massive landslide on the Kalbenstein, exposing a 90 metre thick profile. The 295 metre high Kalbenstein is one of the last original terraced vineyards in Franconia. It has been a nature reserve since 2007 in order to preserve the numerous dry stone walls and steps. The south-west facing vineyards with a 60% slope cover 14 hectares of vineyards on limestone and marl soils with a special microclimate due to their proximity to the River Main. The main varieties grown here are Pinot Noir and Silvaner. The wineries Klaus Höfling, Stefan Vetter and members of the Franconian Winegrowers' Association, for example, have shares in the site.
