The French breeder Victor Ganzin created a series of rootstocks in the last third of the 19th century. Some of them were crosses between Aramon x Rupestris Ganzin (American wild vine of the species Vitis rupestris). Aramon Rupestris Ganzin No. 1 (also Ganzin 1, AxR 1, ARG 1), which was created in 1879, achieved doubtful fame. Due to insufficient phylloxera resistance, this rootstock caused major problems in California in the 1980s (see AxR 1). A cross between Aramon Rupestris - Ganzin No. 4 x Alicante Henri Bouschet resulted in the variety Alicante Ganzin. See also under Literature and Viticultural Personalities.
For my many years of work as an editor with a wine and culinary focus, I always like to inform myself about special questions at Wine lexicon. Spontaneous reading and following links often leads to exciting discoveries in the wide world of wine.
