The French Rebenzüchtung Victor Ganzin Victor (1838-1900) developed in 1879 through Kreuzung of the variety Aramon Noir with an American Wildreben Vitis rupestris a series of hybrid Unterlage & Unterlagsrebe, which he named shortly AxR (Aramon x Rupestris) after the parents. The most successful of these was the AxR 1 (in Frankreich, Australien and Neuseeland it is called ARG 1). This rootstock was initially very popular in France and Übersee due to its vigor and Ertrag and was widely used. However, as early as 1903, the insufficient Reblaus and short lifespan were recognized in France, and therefore its use was discontinued.
