Flavour characteristic of certain species of American grapes and the wine made from them, which is usually considered negative according to European tastes (in Japan, however, this note is perceived as pleasant). The flavour is often described as intense and unpleasant, accompanied by a sweetish, artificial note reminiscent of overripe fruit, strawberry jam or grape juice. The smell and taste evoke associations of animal and earthy tones reminiscent of a fox's den, complemented by nuances of fox urine (cat urine), wet fox fur, damp earth and occasionally animal faeces.
